Certain ceremonies were given over to
the direction of priestesses. Among these was the feast
of the goddess known as Our Grandmother. A priestess called "the
white woman" was in charge of tending the ritual fires and sweeping
out the temple.
When entering a temple, it would not have been unusual to come
upon priestesses as well as priests.
Soon after birth, girls were sometimes brought to
the nearest temple, where a gift of incense to the priest ensured
a future career for the child.
